Robert Louis Hazen Obituary
Phys Ed - 11/11/2013

Born on June 16, 1923, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H., Robert Louis Hazen was the son of Louis Arthur Hazen and Verona Nichols Hazen. He entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at the age of 90 years. After battling various serious physical problems for years, he chose to spend his final days at home surrounded by his wife of over 68 years, May Louise Bedell Hazen; his five surviving children: Robert Arthur, Nancy Elizabeth, James Steven, Thomas Frederick and Kenneth Michael; several of his grandchildren; and other extended family members. Daniel Louis, their fifth son, passed away in 1980.
He grew up in Nashua, N.H., graduated from Nashua High School, class of 1941. He entered Springfield College, leaving there in December 1942. Like many young men of the "Greatest Generation," Bob Hazen believed it was his patriotic duty to serve his country and enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a cadet, and received his wings and commission as Lieutenant on August 4, 1944, at the Army Air Force Pilot School at Turner Field, Ga. After training at Will Rogers Field in Oklahoma, he would become a member of the 642nd Bombardment Squadron (L), where he served in the European Theater. He flew well in excess of 22 missions over various locations concentrated mostly in France. During the latter part of May 1945, Bob was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.
On Aug. 2, 1945, just before the end of the war, Bob and May married. Their life together began with a return to Springfield College where he earned his degree in Health and Physical Education. Over the following 68 years together they continued to serve each other, the country they loved, the communities they lived in, the family they were blessed with and the school districts Bob taught and coached in. Bob's primary focus in this life was always to be a loving husband, and a kind and understanding father. Family was always of greatest importance to Bob. Secondly Bob's goal was to be a role model to the hundreds of young lives he touched through the years by teaching high school science, physical education and coaching the varsity basketball teams and other athletic teams. He was a teacher, a friend, a mentor, and a wise guide to his children and his students. Bob taught in Cornish Maine and in Sayville, Long Island, N.Y.
Bob and May purchased land in South Hiram, Maine, in the late 1950s. It was on this land that the family spent their summers. Their children learned the benefit of hard work, team work, the joy of being a part the most wonderful institution: a family. Bonds were formed and furthered there, while memories for a life time were made.
Upon retirement, Bob and May moved to Vermont where they built a home on land they owned in Sutton, Caledonia County. Here Bob and his lifetime partner continued to serve the community they came to love, made numerous friends and welcomed many grandchildren and great-grandchildren into their home, their lives and their hearts. Bob maintained a productive garden and drove for RTC, taking many kidney dialysis patients to Lancaster, N.H., for their treatments.
How do you measure the life of one good man? Robert Hazen was a loving, unselfish, decent, very wise man. He loved his parents, his lovely wife, six children, all of the young people whose lives he built character into, his friends and neighbors and his country. He believed in paying attention to instruction, sound learning, gaining understanding, and applying wisdom. Born of faith in God, Robert Louis Hazen leaves a legacy of love and wisdom. If loyalty, honesty, fidelity, respectability, sheer goodness and love of God and family are considered, Bob Hazen was an icon; a man of honor, kindness, love and dignity. He asked for little, gave much, and loved deeply. Never a showy or ostentatious man, he was and will always be remembered as a genuine New England gentleman.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday evening, Nov. 12, from 6-8 p.m. at Guibord Funeral Home in Lyndonville, Vt. A Celebration of Bob Hazen's life will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. at the Funeral Home with Dr. Fred Tomaselli officiating. Burial will take place with military honors immediately following the celebration in Lyndon Center Cemetery. All who have known and loved him are welcome to join his wife, five children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren to salute this wonderful man; one man so worthy of knowing.
A fifth son, Daniel Louis Hazen, went Home to Heaven many long years ago and he has, without question, welcomed his beloved father into the only place where there is no more pain, no more suffering, no more tears or sorrow, and where there is only "fullness of joy" in the presence of the Lord. (Psalm 16:11)
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to RCT or The Fold Family Ministries, C/O Bob Hazen, P.O. Box 452 Lyndon Center, VT 05850
